John-Pierre’s intercessions always sound a bit peculiar: they include personal concerns and the spirit of the universal church, the here and now and the time when his brothers had to die. His gestures are subtle. The atmosphere in the monastery: in this world, yet not really of this world.

8:30 AM:

The young gardener Godefroid put a little bag with seeds of four-o’clock flowers in front of my cell door. He is a quiet person who does not talk much, so this was his way of showing me a sign of compassion. In the fall, he will be ordained to the priesthood in Aiguebelle. Next year when the pink flowers will blossom, I will think of him.
